Here is a thought on the golden rule that you quoted:
“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.â€

I believe this rule is great, however there is a platinum rule that modifies the golden rule a little:
The platinum rule is – “Do unto others as they would like to have done onto them” – Unknown.
Let me explain, by following the golden rule, if I am okay with you me telling a racist joke, then by the golden rule it would be okay to tell racist jokes to anyone because “do onto others as you would have others do onto you”. With the platinum rule, I would not tell you a racist joke if I felt that it is not what you would want done onto you.
